Middle name

[edit]

His middle initial is L. It doesn't show on his birth record but it appears on one of the residency records he's featured in. I can't find anywhere what it stands for. Anybody have an idea where we could find this? --Jkaharper (talk) 17:52, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The middle initial was added to Wikipedia in May 2021. Encyclopedia Britannica has listed an "L." middle initial since August 2020. However, none of the other authoritative sources I could find (such as Allmovie or The Encyclopedia of African American History) ever listed a middle initial. Furthermore, Carol Bergman's 1990 biography gives his birth name as simply "Sidney Poitier".
Residency records are generally not acceptable sources per WP:PRIMARY. So out of precaution I'd rather leave out the middle initial. Arbor to SJ (talk) 19:35, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I should also remark that his ISNI entry simply lists "Sidney" as his forename and "Poitier" as his surname. No middle initial. No other name, too. MarcelDupré1886 (talk) 22:22, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Source suitability

[edit]

Sidney Poitier Black and White: Sidney Poitier's Emergence in the 1960s as a Black Icon shows up only twice on worldcat worldcat.org, and does not seem to have any scholarly reviews or mentions on Google Scholar. Given that it seems to be mostly an e-book, it is quite possible that it punches above its apparent weight, but I don’t see any evidence of that.

@H4R0LD19800820:, would you be able to link to some of this before re-adding it? Qwirkle (talk) 20:39, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Japan

[edit]

Poitier was made ambassador to Japan, but there is no mention in this article of him living there. Did he never live there?--Jack Upland (talk) 02:30, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Great question Jack Upland. I dug a bit and found this 1997 article that clarified that Poitier would not live in Japan but would "act as ambassador from abroad" as the Bahamas does not have an embassy in Japan. Please see https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1997-04-15-9704160208-story.html. Jurisdicta (talk) 19:43, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I suspected that.--Jack Upland (talk) 20:55, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Birth year

[edit]

I realize this is original research so it probably can't be incorporated in the article, but in searching for Poitier in Ancestry I find that his 1943 draft card shows a birth date of 1925, not 1927. If he was born in 1927 he would not have registered for the draft in 1943. I imagine if he was intent on joining the service he might have lied and registered for the draft using a phony birth year. However, voluntary enlistments ended in December 1942 by Executive Order of President Roosevelt. I imagine it is possible that Poitier shaved two years off his age, which is not uncommon in the performing arts. There is nothing in the SSDI. Coretheapple (talk) 17:05, 29 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
